Potter County is on the High Plains of the Panhandle, is bordered on the north by Moore County, on the east by Carson County, on the south by Randall County, and on the west by Oldham County. Its seat is Amarillo. As of the 2010 census, the population was 121,073. The county was named for Robert Potter, a politician, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Secretary of the Texas Navy.

Wheat and sorghum were the area’s most important crops; livestock and livestock products accounted for about 51 percent of the county’s agricultural income. Helium, caliche, sulfur, sand and gravel, petroleum, and natural gas were also extracted in the area. In 1982 almost 48,477,000,000 cubic feet of gas-well gas, more than 382,000 barrels of petroleum, and more than 1,867,000,000 cubic feet of casinghead gas were produced in the county.
